SU junior Lauren Juzang has become one of the most beloved student artists on campus for her consistent output of delicate and playful indie-pop. Her newest single, “It’s The Holidays!,” was released on December 6th and brings a melancholic pining to the holiday season.

The song, which was written on last year’s Boxing Day by Juzang and her good friend Otis Gordon, outlines a narrative of longing for the impossible company of someone special over the holiday season. Listening to this song feels like wrapping yourself in a blanket and absorbing the warmth of a fireplace, yet not being able to appreciate the comfort because your mind is in a faraway place. The track produces emotions not far off from your average Bon Iver or Phoebe Bridgers acoustic ballad.

These feelings can be credited to the tender production of the song, which Juzang’s recent Instagram post gives more background on. On the post, Juzang credits producer Devin Hoffman with bringing “the production on this song to life.”

Perfectly layered vocals and acoustic guitar make up most of the sound, but the addition of a shining tambourine, a muffled drum kit, an understated baseline, and distant keys combine to craft a refined sound. Not only does the production impress, but the phrasing of the song is perfect as well. The song starts and ends quietly, but swells at around the halfway point, rising climatically before drifting back down to tranquility.

Past hits like “It’ll Be (Video Game Song),” “Yeehoo!,” and “Best Behavior” established that nothing Juzang releases can be classified as remotely amateur, and her newest release upholds this standard. With “It’s The Holidays!,” Juzang once again proved herself as a wonderful young artist and a stand-out member of the Syracuse music community.
