Preview: SUR's Annual Acoustic Show

By Kate Canete

The Syracuse University community is filled with talented artists, and a number of them are signed to Marshall Street Records – one of two student-run record labels on campus, the second being Syracuse University Recordings.

Tonight, Oct. 26, three MSR artists are playing a free acoustic show put on by Orange Music Group and SUR starting at 8 pm. The show is in the Jabberwocky Cafe in the basement of the Schine Student Center, and the event is free for students. This is an extension of Orange Music Group’s semester-long Open Mic Night series. On select Thursday nights, any student who wishes to perform is welcome to take the stage with all basic sound equipment provided!

So who’s playing tonight? At around 8:15, you can catch singer-songwriter Todd Anastos. Anastos used to play all over Chicago in a band with his brothers — one of their most notable performances was at House of Blues. Now at Syracuse, he’s working on launching his solo career. When he’s not performing solo, he can be found singing with the a cappella group Orange Appeal and the Syracuse University Wind Ensemble. Find him on Facebook

At 9, Special McKinley will take the stage. Special McKinley is the project of James Dean Gardner, a Syracuse student from Western New York. Gardner is involved with all aspects of his music: writing, producing, and promotion. His writing is influenced by a lot of electronic and post-punk rock artists. Special McKinley’s most recent release was in May of this year with his EP Subliminal. Follow him on Instagram @SpecialMcKinley.

Singer-songwriter Sabrina Lambros will perform around 9:30. Lambros, a music education student from Massachusetts, has been singing since a young age and is continuing her vocal career here at 'Cuse. Her main sources of  inspiration include Halsey and Marina and The Diamonds. Lambros plans to release a new EP in the spring, with some singles being released this fall.
