“Bedroom Velvet”: Sultry and Smooth
Gaby Paul simmers on her newly released single.

There is a certain sonic lineage of R&B that Gaby Paul has seemingly dipped into on her new single, “Bedroom Velvet”. It’s an atmospheric song that’s dripping with nostalgic feels, saturated with a certain kind of tension that manages to hypnotize you. Think Lana Del Ray, Amy Winehouse, and Nina Simone, all of whom Paul credits as influences.
Forming the core of the song is a slinking chord progression. Pulsing underneath the vocals, it gives shimmering polish to the entire song. In my exchange with her, Paul elaborated on the production of the song.
“I like the feeling of those chords coupled along with the vocal harmonies layered among the piece. In my opinion, it gives a feeling of bittersweet nostalgia and that’s what I like most about ‘Bedroom Velvet.’”
I couldn’t agree more. There’s a timelessness to the sound of “Bedroom Velvet”. It’s a song for staring at your ceiling, reminiscing about bygone moments. Gaby Paul has delivered your new favorite winter slow jam, one that will leave you floating in her sound.
