Awareness N' Waffles
By Katie Canete
Indie rocker Laura Stevenson and blues singer Cat Clyde are stopping in downtown Syracuse on October 25th for the Crisis Text Line Benefit Festival. The event will be at Funk ‘N Waffles (downtown, of course)- doors at 7 and music at 8.
Coordinating the event is Rebecca Duke, a senior in the Bandier Program for Music and the Entertainment Industries. She has worked as a Crisis Text Line Crisis Counselor during her time at Syracuse University, and is now bringing awareness and support to the organization through her passion for music.
Crisis Text Line is a free 24/7 support service for those in crisis. By texting the number 741741 from anywhere in the United States, users are connected with trained Crisis Counselors that can help in moments of emotional distress. The organization needs support in matching the growing demand for the service. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Crisis Text Line.
Though she often performs with her band, Laura Stevenson is headlining the show as a solo performer, giving the audience a more intimate set. Some of Stevenson’s music brings attention to her personal battle with mental illness; it’s clear music has been a great channel for her emotions. Stevenson has played alongside a number of acts such as Against me!, The Go-Go’s, Kevin Devine, and more. The New York artist is all about self-assurance, especially highlighted in her most recent album Cocksure. Direct support for the show is Ontario-based artist Cat Clyde. She brings a new life to an older genre; her rich bluesy vocals are met with a contemporary feel. Some of her influences are Etta James and Janis Joplin.
Come out to support a great cause, listen to some fantastic music, and support a fellow student!
