The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia heat up on “Moth To A Flame”

By Kyle Henderson

The third single from the house music group’s upcoming album has arrived.

The Weeknd has had a fantastic year in terms of collaborations with other artists. First, there was his remix of “Save Your Tears” with pop diva Ariana Grande, with whom he frequently collaborates with. Then, there was Kanye West’s “Hurricane,” where he serenaded listeners on the chorus of the song with heavenly vocals backed by a choir. “Moth To A Flame,” is the latest collaborative effort in his discography, combining his talents with those of Swedish house music trio Swedish House Mafia. The result is a dance-heavy synth track of longing and love that proves a fruitful venture for all parties involved.

The track is the third single from Swedish House Mafia’s highly anticipated upcoming album, Paradise Again, set to drop in April. The trio’s last single came with their 2012 classic, “Don’t You Worry Child,” featuring John Martin, which was their last song before their split in 2013. The release follows their returning single, “It Gets Better,” as well as their previous collaboration with rapper Ty Dolla Sign and hip-hop artists 070 Shake, entitled “Lifetime.” The group, consisting of Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso, are set to tour their latest album next year, returning to an EDM scene that’s missed them dearly.

“Moth To A Flame” is The Weeknd’s latest outing since his summer release “Take My Breath.” The song is more of a solid dance song, partly reminiscent of the retro sound that Tesfaye frequently utilized in his After Hours era. Swedish House Mafia’s dreamy synth dance beat makes an excellent pairing with Tesfaye’s delicate yet powerful vocals. He calls out to a former lover, questioning her feelings and asking if her new partner truly loves her like he does. It’s a small dose of the toxic playboy energy Tesfaye often toys with in his lyrics, and while the song focuses on the desires of the heart, Swedish House Mafia’s handiwork makes it easy to dance the heartbreak and longing away.
