Gloss Release Entrancing EP, Entwine

By: Sammi DeLuca

If you’ve ever been listening to someone like Benny Sings or the Free Nationals or even Clairo and thought to yourself, “I love this but I wish it was a little more psychedelic,” or “I wish this was a little more upbeat,” or “this is cool but I wish it was written and performed by three BADASS women,” than Gloss is the band for you.

Based out of Philly, Gloss is an up and coming all-female indie, pop, and R&B group. They consist of Sophia Grosshause (keys/vocals), Harlee Torres (bass), and Mollie Schechter (drums). These ladies come together to create passionate, meaningful, and memorable music. Their sound is a distinct and unique blend of psych pop, funk, and alt R&B. Gloss formed at the University of The Arts in Philadelphia. They were inspired to form so that they could combat the lack of female representation within the music industry. They hope that they can be an inspiration to other women to create as well!

Their debut EP Entwined was released on March 26.  It consists of 4 absolute bangers, including their two hit singles, “Play Myself Again” and “Mariposa.”  Entwined consists of rocking guitar solos, bouncy keyboarding, and absolutely ridiculous harmonies. All of the songs are different, but the collection of 4 songs still allows Gloss to find a definitive voice and show off their signature-- and soon to be iconic-- sound.

“Third Person” is the first song on Entwined. It starts out as slow, melodic, peaceful and mellow but through the different sections of the song the guitar picks up and a fast drum beat is played keeping the song interesting. This is definitely the jazziest song on Entwined.

“Play Myself Again” is a fun and upbeat but at the same time peaceful song.  The bouncy, funky  piano riff juxtaposed with the peaceful fingerpicking in the song makes it a bop for the ages.

“Mariposa,” which was Gloss’s first single, definitely has the most classic modern psychedelic sound to it. In terms of instrumentation, it is very busy but has a consistent happy and relaxed melody.

“Walk On” is the last song on Entwined. It combines a retro 80s synthesizer sound with incredible vocal harmonies and beachy guitar riffs.

The overall vibe of Entwined is funky, mellow, and melodic. All of the songs are interesting, complex, and different, but definitely are consistent with Gloss’s incredible and unique sound!
